Tax time can be everything but smart and simple, so we’ve put together answers to many of the most common tax refund questions we have received from MAX customers.

How do I determine the status of my tax refund?

If you do not see your tax refund yet, MAX has not received it. Unfortunately, our team members and consultants will not have any information regarding your refund or when it will be available. We will always post your refund to your account immediately. Keep in mind that your return may be pending, even after it is posted. We will indicate this on the tax refund transaction on your account within MAX online and mobile banking.

Many different factors can affect the timing of your refund after the IRS receives your return. The best way to find your estimated refund date is to visit IRS.gov. Click the Refunds link in the main navigation. Select “Check My Refund Status” for details. The IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, although some require additional time. If your refund date has passed, please contact the IRS for more information.

I do not have a MAX checking account. Can I apply for a MAX checking account before filing my taxes and receive the refund to my new account?

Yes, you can. MAX has checking accounts designed with you in mind. Our most popular account, Achieve checking, makes your money work harder for you. Review our options and choose the account that is best for you. You can apply online right now if you wish.

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call or send us an email. Of course, you can also stop by one of our branches and speak to one of our knowledgeable consultants.

What is the typical refund processing time for the IRS?

If you e-file your tax returns with direct deposit, the IRS states that most tax returns with direct deposit are processed within 21 days of IRS acceptance. If you mailed paper returns, the processing time could be 6 to 8 weeks from the date the IRS receives your tax return.

How do I deposit my tax refund to my MAX account?

The IRS states that direct deposit is the “best and fastest way to get your tax refund.”

MAX has three options you can use for refund checks:

  1. To deposit into your MAX share account: Write/type your share account number (member number) on the tax form and notate "Savings".
  2. To deposit into your MAX checking account: Write/type your checking or money market account number on your tax form and notate "Checking". Your checking account number is located at the bottom of your checks, after MAX's routing number, 262275958. Hint: Your checking account number is a 14-digit number if it begins with "1". On your check it is typicially the number after the second colon, either beginning with 70199 or 1100000. Include all 14 digits on the tax form (72d).
  3. Deposit into your MAX money market account: Write/type your money market account number on your tax form and notate "Checking." Your checking account number is located at the bottom of your checks, after MAX's routing number, 262275958. Hint: Your checking account number is a 14-digit number if it begins with "1." Include all 14 digits on the tax form (72d)

Before filing your taxes, please make sure each year that the MAX account number you entered on your tax forms is correct so that your refund is deposited quickly and accurately in the appropriate account. Even if it is pre-filled from last year's return, you must still verify for accuracy. MAX will not be held responsible for tax refunds that are posted to a valid account number that is not the intended account.* Customers requesting refunds to be deposited into an account other than their own account will be responsible for funds recovery, if necessary. If you have questions regarding your tax refund and direct deposit account, please call the myMAX Service Center at 334.260.2600 or 1.800.776.6776. For more information about filing your tax return form, contact your local IRS District Office or visit http://www.irs.gov/.

How important is it to have the correct account number? Is MAX liable for a tax refund sent to an account that does not belong to the named or intended recipient?

It is of utmost importance that you have the accurate account number for your tax refund. Financial institutions may post IRS tax refunds received via the Automated Clearing House network using the account number only.

MAX is not responsible for an IRS tax refund sent through the ACH network to an erroneous or fraudulent account since the IRS provided incorrect account information. The incorrect banking information may have been supplied to the IRS by the taxpayer on his/her signed tax return which authorized Direct Deposit. For these reasons, we STRONGLY encourage our customers who wish to receive their tax refund by direct deposit to double check their bank account and the institution’s respective routing number they enter on their return to prevent a misdirected payment.

Can I deposit my tax refund paper check using mobile deposit via the MAX Mobile Banking app?

Every situation is different. We ask that you contact us so we can speak about your refund and account capabilities specifically. Just give us a call at 334.260.2600 or 800.776.6776 during normal business hours.

Are there limits to the amount I can direct deposit into my account?

No. There are no maximum limits. If you are expecting a large tax refund, it will be posted to your account as normal.

Can I deposit a joint refund into my MAX account?

Yes, you can deposit your joint refund into your MAX account. The name on your tax refund must match the name on your MAX account. To be deposited, our system needs to match one of the names on the direct deposit to the name on your account. If you file jointly, your partner’s name may also appear on your tax refund.

If you recently got married, make sure to update the name on your MAX account so that it matches the name on your tax return.

Can I deposit a tax refund that is in the name of my domestic partner, spouse, dependent, or child?

No. You can only post a deposit to your MAX account if it matches the name on your account. You cannot deposit someone else’s tax refund into your MAX account.

If you recently got married, make sure to update the name on your MAX account so that it matches the name on your tax return.

I requested direct deposit, but received a check from the IRS. Why?

The IRS is limiting the number of direct deposits that go into a single bank account or prepaid debit card to three tax refunds per year. Your limit may have been exceeded. If this is not the case, you may want to contact the IRS for details.

I mailed my tax return. When can I start checking on the status of my tax refund?

If you mailed a paper tax return, you can start checking the status of your tax refund about four weeks after sending.

I still have questions regarding my tax refund. Who can I contact?

For more information about filing your tax return form, contact your local IRS District Office or visit www.irs.gov.
