MAX Sting Fest

The first MAX Sting Fest was held in Montgomery at Riverwalk Stadium on April 11, 2018. The Alabama State Hornets faced the Mississippi State Bulldogs on the diamond in a much anticipated showdown of two great collegiate programs.

The MSU Bulldogs dominated the game, winning 15-4, with the ASU Hornets giving up seven runs in the first inning.

The Bulldogs latched on to the needed victory early, and refused to let it go. MSU took a 12-0 lead before ASU was able to respond with their first run in the seventh inning. All of Alabama State’s four runs came in the seventh inning to make it a 12-4 ballgame. The Wednesday night action was viewed by 1,502 fans.

MSU’s big offensive night was good enough for 23 hits, a new season-high. Mangum, Stovall, Skelton and Westburg each had three hits for the Bulldogs. MSU’s bats were hot from the very beginning.

The Bulldogs began the game with a Luke Alexander double to score Jake Mangum, followed by Hunter Stovall bringing Alexander across the plate on a single. Tanner Allen scored on an error, and Jordan Westburg hit a two-run homer over the wall at center field. Dustin Skelton then scored the final run of the first inning off a single by Alexander.

Alabama State’s Ray Hernandez singled through the left side with two outs in the seventh inning to finally get the Hornets buzzing. He was pushed to second on a Gustavo Rios single and scored on a Cage Cox double to left center for the first run of the game for Alabama State. Rios and Cox scored on a Hunter Allen single to left field. Allen managed to score the final ASU run on a fielding error by Mississippi State.

Mississippi State had seven different players pick up multiple hits off of three Alabama State pitchers. The Hornets had 14 hits against four MSU pitchers.
