MAXimizing all the fun you can have in one place!

Since 1935, the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) has been dedicated to creating and promoting a balance between use, management and protection of Alabama’s wildlife, fish, forest, water, and soils through education, landowner assistance and promoting our hunting and angling heritage. Recognizing the lack of hands-on outdoor learning opportunities available to students, the AWF made conservation education a priority of its mission in 1994. There are planned activities going on all the time at the NaturePlex: Monday-Friday a nature-themed movie will play at the top of every hour. Every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-4:00 pm, join us for a Creature Feature, to participate in a hands-on encounter with one of our resident animals. Every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 am, hit one of the trails with our experienced naturalist to learn about the woods, water, and wildlife that make Lanark such a beautiful place. Young people ages 8 and under, will enjoy the Early Explorers program once a month for the public monthly as well as by appointment for private groups. Don’t forget every third Thursday night, beginning at 6:00 pm, bring the entire family out for a special program that is sure keep you coming back for more! Saturdays are always a big deal at the NaturePlex with movies playing at the top of the hour from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm; and special planned outside-oriented activity at 11:30 am with Animal Encounters at 1:00 pm.

The NaturePlex is the 23,000 square foot structural facility that serves as the Welcome and Education Center for the Alabama Nature Center. The facility includes a 120-seat Theater equipped with up to date technology; Hands-on Discovery Hall with wildlife and nature-based displays; Educational Classrooms; Community Room available for meeting use and rental; and Gift Shop. General admission includes access to the hands-on Discovery Hall, Theater, Classrooms, Community Room, Gift Shop, and hiking miles of scenic boardwalks and trails, while learning about the fascinating natural history of central Alabama. But in the process, a kind of super-organism is created in which individual intelligence is superseded by a collective consciousness that shares information and moves with a single purpose for the benefit of all.
